Blu-ray Review: Iron Sky: The Coming Race

In 2012, Timo Vuorensola, Johanna Sinisalo and Michael Kalesniko brought us Iron Sky, the Nazi science-fiction comedy the world didn’t know it was missing. In 1945, Hitler escaped and has been hiding in a secret base on the dark side of the Moon. Whilst his invasion of earth may not have been successful in 2018 it did lead to the nuclear war which destroyed the planet. Producer Tero Kaukomaa is back and this time he’s behind the camera for Iron Sky: The Coming Race.

Twenty years later, a small community of survivors are now living in the abandoned Nazi Moon base. Hardly a paradise off Earth, it’s run by Renate Richter (Julia Dietze) and a fascist cult, the Jobists, led by a power-hungry leader (Tom Green). Her daughter Obi (Lara Rossi) discovers that there might be survivors hidden in an underground city in the centre of Earth and is determined to rescue them. She enlists the help of a Russian pilot (Vladimir Burlakov) and the faithful Malcolm (Kit Dale) for her mission.

Whilst you know what you’re going to get from Iron Sky: The Coming Race, it has one or two surprises up its sleeve. At times it’s incredibly daft but it’s also good-natured and rather fun. Indeed, there are some moments of absolute brilliance and clearly a lot of effort has been expended in its creation. It feels much tighter than the original, and whilst at times it does lose focus, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Iron Sky is released on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital by 101 Films on 6 May.
