Festival Preview: Celluloid Screams 2018

Now in its tenth year, Celluloid Screams has become a key part of the UK horror film festival circuit. Guided by loving hands, it has changed and grown into an extremely popular event, whilst at the same time retaining a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. In previous years it has brought us the likes of The Witch, Raw, Paranormal Activity, Snowtown and What We Do in the Shadows. This year, the festival adds an extra day; taking place between 18th-21st October at the Showroom Cinema, Sheffield.

Whilst the weekend passes have all been snapped up, there are individual tickets available. The line-up this year is even more moth-warming than usual. Here are a few of our highlights:

Mandy

Pacific Northwest. 1983 AD. Outsiders Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough) lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache), Red is catapulted into a phantasmagoric journey filled with bloody vengeance and laced with fire.

Assassination Nation

High school senior Lily and her group of friends live in a haze of texts, posts, selfies and chats just like the rest of the world. So, when an anonymous hacker starts posting details from the private lives of everyone in their small town, the result is absolute madness leaving Lily and her friends questioning whether they’ll live through the night.

Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode, who comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Possum

The film follows the story of a disgraced children’s puppeteer who returns to his childhood home and is forced to confront his wicked stepfather and the secrets that have tortured him his entire life.

Summer of ‘84

Summer, 1984: The perfect time to be 15 years old and free. But when neighborhood conspiracy theorist Davey Armstrong begins to suspect his police officer neighbor might be the serial killer all over the local news, he and his three best friends begin an investigation that soon turns dangerous.

Tigers Are Not Afraid

Estrella is 11, and when her mother vanishes, she makes a wish: she wants her mother to come back. And mom does return – from the dead. Terrified, Estrella escapes and joins a rag-tag gang of other children orphaned by the violence, all escaping their own past. But she learns that in a city ruled by death, you can’t simply leave the ghosts behind; they walk with you wherever you go.

Individual tickets are available from 1 October via the Showroom Cinema. To find out more, visit the Celluloid Screams website.
