Track: Brontosaurus – Safe to Surface

We’re suckers here at Backseat Mafia for noises duo’s, and so when we discovered Chicago two piece Brontosaurus, aka Nicholas Kelley and Nicholas Papaleo, that mixed up prog, math, chamber pop into one glorious sound, we had to take a look. Well, listen.

The duo have a new record, Our Animal Ways out June 9th, a follow up to the bands debut long player, 2011’s Cold Comes to Claim. Taken from it is Safe to Surface. It starts slowly, these guitars winding in and out of the mix as the vocal, almost folky sounding, with added harmonies stretch things out with their long phrases. Soon though, it settles into this slice of ambitious but deeply melodic…well, prog/pop/math(ish). Almost everywhere you listen there’s something to catch your attention, from the intricacies of the arrangement, to the simplicity of the piano line towards the end, before the band wind things up to finish.

Forget what genre it is,just know that it’s good. Very good.
