Taken from his forthcoming EP, Helmsman, The Voyeur is the new track from singer-songwriter John Jefferson. Taking elements of the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Blaze Foley and The Doors as an influence on his music, the nautical title of the EP comes from its writing and recording – written on a narrow-boat while travelling though Hertfordshire, and recorded on a ship called Lightship95 at London docklands last Christmas.
The Voyeur is a country blues, slow moving but deliciously melodic, in a way that really captivates you. His vocal is understated, but Jefferson almost seems to have the ability to croon and whisper at the same time. Throw in all the classic ingredients – splashes of organ, harmonica and guitar solo and just that little bit of echo and melancholy, and you have something that’s actually rather lovely.
