Playlist: Reggae producer JStar shares what’s rocking his DJ sets

A while ago we featured Bad Boy Stepping, the new single from West London reggae producer and DJ JStar. We’ve been back and asked him what rocking his DJ sets and he’s picked out a bunch of his set-fillers and favourites.

“Right now I seem to be DJing a lot of the album material as after the Soom T tour in October I found a way to showcase it as a DJ set. But of course there are other times when I am dressing the album set up either side, here are some of my current favourites to play!”

Touch the stylee – Mungo’s Hi Fi ft Little John

a lovely bubbler reworking of a Derrick Harriott’s Solomon riddim, also cut with Danman and DJ Queen

Vibronics meets Conscious_Sounds – Try A Dub

A deep cut that works as a stand alone or with an MC in the arena, Dougie Wardrop and Steve Vibraonic have been at the forefront of UK roots music for 30 years

Do it Anyway – Harold Butler

this great mid 70’s reggae boogie cover of BT Express’s “Do it til your satisfied’ also has the same baseline as Dillingers ‘Cocaine’ and exquisitely uses Marcia Griffths on vocals

Message Whip – Jstar

this is a little boogie reggae mashup I made for shows using Derek Harriot’s 1983 track “Whip It” and “The Message” by Grandmaster Melle Mel

Stand By Me – DCMJr refix

A sublime little mashup I found on Soundcloud by DontCalMeJunior using the Heartless Riddim and Ben E King’s Classic. Works well , in a half time tempo 124 / 62 bpm

It Can’t Work – Tony Rebel

A really tight and conscious track from Tony Rebel on the ‘Tonight’ riddim , produced by Penthouse in the 90s. I’ve been playing this track for 24 years, and it has never lost its power

Analog Steak (Danny Scrilla remix) – Moresounds

Not sure how to describe this – it’s a bass genre for sure, 85 bpm, it has a dub step sensibility but it certainly would be rid to call it dubstep. You can definitely pull a screw face to it, and makes me nod my head like a mad chicken, and it will yours too

Bounty Hunter (Rahmanee Remix) – Chopstick Dubplate ft Cheshire Cat

Serbia’s Rahmanee never fails with his Drum and Bass remixes, I play quite a few of them – and this has an old school flavour that everyone jumps up to

JAHJAH DUB – Rusko

Rusko did a series of tracks each day for a couple of weeks and this killa jungle lick with some wizzy techno noises is just pure fire!

Urban Mystic (JStar Remix) – Longfingah meets Hardy Digital

This is a pretty full on steppas track, uncompromising with a heavy bassline that has ruined many a speaker, with Berlin’s Longfingah on the mic. Bangs every time

Bad Boy Stepping featuring Ranking Joe – Jstar
The new single released this month, it’s on the album, but comes with remixes too. I like the straight up original, the digital synth bass and live horns somehow bring a fresh sound to this 140bpm genre, and Ranking Joe’s percussive elaborating on worldwide gangsta biznizz and appeal to the youth to look outside of the glamour of the gun, just glues it all together magically
