Psych Insight: Live, Kandodo5, Liverpool PsychFest, 26.09.15

Kandodo3 is a project founded by Simon Price, along with fellow Heads Wayne Maskell and Hugo Morgan. Considerably less raw and brusque than their former band, Kandodo3 is more about expansive soundscapes and aural topology that the full on sonic assault that marked The Heads oeuvre. Having heard the k2o album, and especially the live version of ‘Laud the Hyena’ on the Cardinal Fuzz ‘Stay Holy’ album, released in conjunction with the label’s curation of the Camp stage at the Festival; I was really looking forward to seeing the band live, especially as the trio came out with remaining ‘Head’ Paul Allen, as well as Rich Millman from Carlton Melton morphing into Kandodo5.

Having said all that it is probably fair to say that the set was one of the most full on of the weekend, well with effectively The Heads +1 on stage it was hardly going to be a chilled out noodle-fest. The addition of Allen and Millman not only added meat but also encouraged innovation and improvisation to a series of already brilliant tracks which laid the Camp stage bare and really ensured that the Cardinal Fuzz ‘Sonic Attack’ stage was well named. I got totally lost in the music and, after having taken a few pics, got totally lost in what they were playing. Kandodo5 was one of the highlights of the PsychFest for me and I really hope that the set was well recorded through the mixing desk because I would love to own it at some point.
