Album Review: The Rezillos – Flying Saucer Attack

A timely reissue of Edinburgh`s finest New Wave Beat Group`s classic Cant Stand The Rezillos and Mission Accomplished albums, packaged togeher under the title Flying Saucer Attack.

Removed from other punk bands of the day The Rezillos leaned on 1950`s and 60`s rock and roll, garage and Sci Fi themed subjects to propel  themselves literally into the homes of many young teenagers during the early punk movement.

The first album recorded in July 78 is widely considered to be a classic featuring re recorded versions of early single releases Can`t Stand My Baby, (My Baby)Does Good Sculptures and Flying Saucer Attack, but it was the single Top Of The Pops which charted at No17 in the UK Chart that gave the band the most success and gave them a top 20 album in the process.

Taking aside the great singles and production on this album its Somebody`s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight credited to Earl Vince and the Valiants which is the highlight of the album for me.

Bonus tracks include the 7 inch single edits of   Top Of The Pops, Can`t Stand My Baby, Sculptures and the follow up release single Destination Venus.

Disc two gives us the Live in Glasgow recorded album Mission Accomplished which contains all the singles again, plus Cold Wars which was released as a 7 inch, and a great version of The Sweet classic Ballroom Blitz. Bonus tracks are more alternate versions and the Cold War`s 7 inch edit.

Sometimes considered a little too plastic for the punk movement The Rezillos appeal and live performances can`t be denied, and therefore it is an essential album to have, the 2 cd set comes with a pullout booklet with notes by Malcolm Donne and band discography.

Having bought these albums on original release it’s a pleasure having them back… just brilliant.
