Track: Eilish Gilligan – S.M.F.Y.

Backseat Mafia were highly impressed by Melburnian native Eilish Gilligan‘s single “Creature of Habit” late last year – a haunting, sparse piece of electronica that highlighted Gilligan’s extraordinary vocals.

Gilligan is back with S.M.F.Y., which, almost impossibly, ups the ante.

Instrumentally this is a far more complex dance-orientated piece with synth riffs and a driving beat that remind me of Norway’s A-ha. At the heart, though, is Gilligan’s extraordinary soaring, melancholic voice that has more range than than the Himalayas and a pop sensibility to match. This is a hauntingly beautiful electro-pop song with wistful lyrics about the travails of a long distance relationship, imbued with an uplifting, optimistic instrumental refrain:

The single is available now at all usual outlets such as Apple Music.

Gilligan is garnering a lot of attention across Australia, receiving airplay across triple j, Double J, ABC Radio National and Unearthed, and community stations across the country. She was also announced as a finalist in triple j’s Lorde remix competition. It’s only a matter of time before her music receives more international recognition.
