Track: Philippe Baden Powell – Chica

‘Chica’ is taken from the new album from French / Brazilian pianist’s new album, his first for Far Out Recordings, which drops on March 24th on heavyweight vinyl, extended ten track CD + digitally.

The son of Brazilian musical legend Baden Powell de Aquino (you recognised the name, right?) who, according to Philippe “transmitted to me the passion and commitment indispensable to any artist,” the album is actually about some advice – “The great Brazilian poet and old family friend, Vinicius de Moraes used to say that ‘life is the art of encounter’, and that is what this album is about.”

Like his father before him Baden Powell’s music is his own reinvention / interpretation of jazz and brazilian music, recruiting a stellar band, which includes French jazz drummer André Ceccarelli, who has worked with everyone from Aretha Franklin to Michel Legrande; prolific Belgian jazz vocalist David Linx; and Afro-Brazilian percussion master Ruca Rebordão.

Chica is this warm Brazilian piano-led jazz, albeit with a laid-back vocal from Linx draped over the top of it all – there’s horns to add a bit of colour, and an attractive shuffle to the vibe which make it virtually impossible not to like. Check it out, here
