Album Review: syrup, go on – Last Light

The delightfully named syrup, go on have already caught our attention with their sparkling debut single ‘Don’t Go (Riding Down the Cosmic Drain)’ and they have just released their debut album ‘Last Light’. And it’s fantastic.

Syrup, go on have developed without doubt one of the most creative sounds around under the loose veil of a shoegaze/dream pop label. I am reminded at times throughout this album of the quirkiness of the B52s or The Flaming Lips: syrup, go on are a band that is not afraid of experimenting or derailing expectations.

Their songs veer from a Mama and Papas sweetness with layered harmonies (‘Ego Sand’, ‘The Sun Ain’t Designed to Heat Up All Of Us and ‘Dismiss Everything’) to dense aural landscapes that evoke My Bloody Valentine at their most explosive (‘Reflection’ and opening self-titled instrumental ‘Syrup, Go On’), with even a touch of Fleetwood Mac in ‘Who Am I Foolin”.

‘Dreams’ is a glorious, mesmerising song, melancholic and, indeed, dreamy that evokes Ride with its layered harmonies and clear sparkling guitars and thundering drums that meanders psychedelically through your head.

This is a bold and dynamic debut from a very exciting band. You can stream or download here.

Syrup, go on will be touring Australia to launch the album:
