Let’s just say that film adaptations of video games tend to end up being huge disappointments. So, when the first Resident Evil film came out in 2002, expectations were low. However, it turned out to be an engaging and entertaining action film. This was largely down to a great central performance from Milo Jovovich and astute action directing from Paul W.S. Anderson. They went on to make another five Resident Evil films together. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is their last.
Alice (Jovovich) wakes after being betrayed once again by Wesker (Shawn Roberts). The Red Queen appears and tells Alice about an airborne antitoxin which will kill anyone affected by the T-Virus. She has 48 hours to reach the Hive in Raccoon City, and disperse it, before mankind is completely wiped-out. Joining-up with a group of survivors, including Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) who Alice thought was dead, they head to The Hive. However, there’s a traitor in their midst, Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) is hot on her heals, and they face the full might of Umbrella Corporation.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter feels very much like a greatest hits version of the franchise. There are all the elements which has made it such a popular series of films, but without any real innovation or fresh elements. It’s solid as opposed to exceptional and not one of the stronger outings. However, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is an entertaining watch. It’s a fitting end for Jovovich and Anderson which tries to sabotage itself in the last shot.
