Inside (À l’intérieur) is one of the best horror films of the last decade. The writing/directing duo of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury announced themselves as an exciting new creative team with a big bloody bang. They followed their success up with the slightly disappointing, yet still inventive, Livid. Their star is set to shine much brighter with the forthcoming Texas Chainsaw prequel, Leatherface. Among the Living, the duos most recent film, is released on DVD next week and is well worth seeking out.
Victor, Tom and Dan (Théo Fernandez, Zacharie Chasseriaud and Damien Ferdel) hate school. They decide to skip out early on their last day to go and explore the deserted film studios outside town. The trio are intent on causing trouble but all that changes when they discover a woman being held hostage by a masked man. Their families and the police refuse to believe the troublemakers’ story, leaving nowhere safe to hide.
Among the Living is a slightly peculiar, yet well made, genre film. Bustillo and Maury have a penchant for taking their ideas from America and then adding their own unique angle. They do that again here, and whilst much of the film will feel more than a little familiar, it’s fresh enough to surprise and shock. Among the Living is a very slick and stylish slasher flick with enough gore and surprises to keep any genre fan happy.
Among the Living is released on DVD by Metrodome on Monday.
