EP: Brenso – Demo EP

The Breakdown

Italian punk played with a 70s heart. Brenso treat us to three tracks of cool lo-fi garage rock with superb guitar work and introduce us to a new Rock Queen in the form of Serena Malossi.
8.0

Brenso (from Bologna’s slang BREve + inteNSO — Short +  Heavy) formed in Bologna in 2019.  The band defines its music as post-covid, over-the-counter rock, influenced by the many sounds and experiences of its members: from Grunge to Desert rock, through punk, hard rock and 1970s psychedelia.

The  Demo-EP ‘Brenso’ was recorded in a one-day live session in July 2020 at Cabot Cove Studios in Bologna, and released in January 2021 on digital music platforms.

The EP kicks off with punk-ish bursts of guitar and the voice of a new Rock Queen Serena Malossi on opening track ‘I’d Reconsider’. The band have a nice loose feel to their playing and the song meanders along at a steady speed through punk to bluesy and lo-fi rock. A confident sneering vocal style with some poignant lyrics, “Cause when you said. We’ll paint our life. What really came. Was black and white”

Bringing a bit of goth to the EP, track ‘Murder For Rock Congregation’ opens with a melodic chord riff trade off between the two guitarists. The goth style carries on through the verse but its the chorus where the track really makes you smile. It comes with a pop twist to soften the darker lyrical meaning.

With upbeat catchy dynamics track ‘Listen’ is an interesting and hypnotic ride with a rolling riff and rock piano straight from the 70’s. The clever guitar interplay between the Lead playing of Francesco Sperti, and rhythm playing of Luca Minnai shines in this track and although the band seem to have a loose playing style, they are actually quite tight. Which along with the guitar work is the key to this tracks appeal.

Bringing some catchy lo-fi tunes that sound great turned up, Brenso’s highlight are those vocals. Slightly affected by Serena Malossi’s accent which only makes a more unique timbre as she transports you back to a sweaty club in London during the late 70s, with an Italian twist.
