Film Festival Preview: Celluloid Screams

It’s that time of year again when Sheffield has to brace itself and prepare for a weekend of sheer and unrelenting horror. No, it’s not panto season quite yet (someone from Coronation Street this year), but the return of Celluloid Screams. The Sheffield Horror Film Festival continues to thrive. This year the focus is firmly on the present, with a top notch line-up of new features and shorts from around the world. Not content with that they’re expanding their Virtual Reality offerings as well. Not for the faint-hearted.

Joining the line-up after a successful Frightfest are The Devil’s Candy and Pet. On a related note, the madcap Cat Sick Blues has its UK premiere at midnight on the Friday. If you prefer to eat your animals, check-out Raw which features in the closing gala. A film which prompted the paramedics being called out at Toronto International Film Festival. Japanese master of terror Kiyoshi Kurosawa will also be making proceedings very Creepy whilst Kevin Smith lightens the tone with Yoga Hosers.

That’s not even mentioning the brilliantly offbeat I am Not a Serial Killer, Sundance Midnight Movie Trash Fire and discovering the afterlife in We Go On. The secret film is always worth the gamble, even if it means Paranormal Activity induced insomnia. Before nostalgia fans reach for the tissues, there’s a great werewolves vs vampires allnighter featuring An American Werewolf in London, Lost Boys, Teen Wolf and From Dusk Till Dawn.

Celluloid Screams take place at the Showroom Cinema, Sheffield over the weekend of 21-23 October. You can snag yourself a full festival pass and Allnighter ticket here. If you’re not up to the whole weekend never fear, you can also purchase individual tickets here.
