Film Review: How to Lose Jobs and Alienate Girlfriends


We live in a world where it’s possible for anyone to become a celebrity. With the advent of the internet and video sharing services such as YouTube, a whole generation has come to believe that fame and fortune is at the tip of their fingers. The rise of shows such as The Voice and X-Factor give the impression that aesthetic considerations and a bit of talent trump hard work and dedication. How to Lose Jobs and Alienate Girlfriends is about three people desperate to be famous.

Tom Meadmore works helping his boss Tony, a documentary film maker, edit his films at Lonely Planet. Tom’s CV seems to comprise having a small part in Neighbours and then smoking a lot of pot, but he’s now determined to make his name as a filmmaker. Tony’s passion is his band Speed Orange and he’s convinced they can make it. Tom’s girlfriend is a budding singer-songwriter, and professional waitress, called Amanda Medica. She also yearns for forge a career from music. Tom decided the focus for his first documentary would with his boss and girlfriend. What could possibly go wrong?

How to Lose Jobs and Alienate Girlfriends is the kind of film which is a joy to watch. Whilst it looks pretty DIY at times, that ethos is part of its charm. Tony digs himself deeper and deeper into a whole as his obsession to make a great film replaces all levels of common sense and sanity. He makes every mistake in the book as he strives to find a story within his footage. Ultimately, it’s a story of three people desperate for success without necessarily having the talent or dedication.


How to Lose Jobs and Alienate Girlfriends is released on iTunes on June 7.
