Film Review: Robin’s Wish

Following his success on the stand-up comedy circuit and the brilliant Mork & Mindy on TV, Robin Williams soon cemented himself as one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood; quickly becoming a household name. Whilst much more than just a comic actor (Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, Awakenings etc), he’ll be remembered by most for his hilarious turns in the likes of Hook, The Fisher King, Mrs. Doubtfire and Patch Adams.

In August 2014, Robin Williams committed suicide at his Californian home. This shocking tragedy stunned fans around the world. The press were quick to attribute his suicide to his well-documented mental health issues or struggles with addiction. However, this was not the case. He suffered from a rare form of dementia called diffuse Lewy body disease. Robin’s Wish, the new documentary from Tylor Norwood, puts the record straight and highlights the impact of this silent killer.

The strength of Robin’s Wish is the decision to focus predominantly on the man himself. His widow, Susan Schneider Williams, was at the heart of making this happen and is the guiding voice throughout. This gives us an intimate glimpse into his life and affords us the opportunity to see ‘behind the scenes’. Emphasis is placed on the impact this disease had on the actor. This allows Robin’s Wish to be both a loving tribute to the comedy maverick and a rallying call to aid early diagnosis and to discover a cure.

Robin’s Wish is out now on Digital and On Demand on all major platforms.
