ALTHOUGH nominally coming out of the worlds of the jazz and the funk, Leron Thomas is in no way the kinda artist who sees the narrow channels of genre or style as any kind of rulebook to be followed.
He oversaw Iggy Pop’s 2019 album, producing, writing and touring in cahoots with the garage-punk legend and 6Music DJ.
And Mr Osterberg repaid the favour by dropping by for Leron’s excellent, consciousness-expanding album from last year, More Elevator Music – which work also features songs as “Blind”, asking us to wake the hell up from the cyclical grind.
But it’s how Leron anad Iggy get it on that’s our concern today – as they trade loose-knit observations about the urban life as viewed by a country boy, over some pretty full-on grunge riffola, mixing it up big style.
“Upon my first couple of conversations with Iggy while working on his Free album, one thing that really resonated with me is that he’s no stranger to the sticks (the country), and like me grew up in that environment,” says Leron.
“Many country kids dream big. And one of our main goals is to move to a big city and make a lasting mark on the world.
“It may on the surface look like a vain pursuit and then it becomes a humbling testimony to the human experience. That is, if one is doing it right. That’s pretty much where my head was when writing this tune.”
