Fewer voices in music are as recognisable as Mark Lanegan. The ex-Screaming Trees frontman has felt like a sought after collaborator with some of the big names across the decade.

Be it his work alongside Afghan Whigs leader Greg Dulli (The Gutter Twins) or his regular appearances alongside Queens of the Stone Age, Lanegan makes a welcome return to the forefront with “Letter Never Sent”, taken from the forthcoming album Somebody’s Knocking, due out October through Heavenly Recordings.

The single seemingly draws part inspiration from the new-wave movement of the ’80s, but also feels part komische music with it’s driving CAN! like drumming and jangly guitar twang that interwave in that german cosmic take on psychedelia.

Lanegan’s vocals are languid throughout the single – which is saying something given how nonchalant the singer can be at the best of times. But that’s what we’ve come to love about Mark; his versatility in his field is almost endless.

Be it his raspy commandeering of our attention during heavier moments of his output, or the more lounge crooning he’s showed off with “I’ll Take Care Of You” some twenty years ago, Lanegan is a musician’s musician.

It’s always felt like commercial consciousness has overlooked him in many ways. Perhaps that’s a blessing to the many fans of his, including myself.

Mark Lanegan Band will be playing a collection of dates in the United Kingdom and Ireland in support of the new album:

12/10/2019 – London, UK – Roundhouse
12/11/2019 – Bristol, UK – SWX
