Ahead of the release of their double a-side record “Only Dating” and “Never Gonna Learn”, both of which have been catching our ear here at Backseat Mafia, we’ve managed to catch up with the Edinburgh four piece – four brothers originally from North Yorkshire. They’ve already released a couple of EP’s, garnered airplay on BBC 6Music and in America, and appeared at festivals including T in The Park, Xpo North and Wide Days.
We grabbed a word with the boys and covered the essentials.
We are Ded Rabbit – Eugene Gaine (vocals), Fergus Gaine (guitar), Donal Gaine (bass) Eoin Gaine (drums).
We are from North Yorkshire Originally but we stay in Edinburgh now.
We met Originally from Yorkshire, Ded Rabbit moved to the Highlands in 1996 and through the isolation and a developing love of music, the brothers started playing music together about ten years ago. After moving to Edinburgh to study, they started working together in the studio, releasing their EPs ‘Wash Away’ 2014, ‘Wake Up In A Dream’ and ‘Moving In Slow Motion’ in 2015 the brotherly unit found their recent partnership with Glasgow based Rocket Science Studios, who have recorded the likes of Texas and Bell & Sebastian.
We make music that sounds like Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Beatles, Queens Of The Stone Age, Fugazi, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Gang Of Four, Interpol, The Cribs, The Libertines, Cream, The Mars Volta, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Liquid Liquid, Sonic Youth, Pixies.
When people ask us who or what we sound like, we say The Cribs, Gang Of Four,
We bonded over Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin
Our name comes from The film ‘Gangs Of New York ‘
The bands that have influenced us most are Probably The Beatles songwriting wise.
We got together, and our first rehearsal involved playing Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes and Eugene must have only been about 12 at the time.
Our first gig was When we were in our early teens.
Our new record is It’s a double – A side ‘Only Dating/Never Gonna Learn’ we wrote them in our drummers bedroom one afternoon and thought they both complement each other nicely so decided to keep them as a pair.
We recorded it Rocket Science Recording Studios Glasgow. We’ve done the past 3 EP’s there and Ross and Michael seem to have a really good thing going there and they’re always a pleasure to work with and seem to get great results in the studio.
The writing process for us is We all write a lot individually so when we’re together we’ve already got a healthy pot of material that we can dip into and take the best bits from each others songs.
We tried to make it sound like We just try to write the type of songs that we want to hear and we think sound cool.
You could say our live show is Energetic. Once Eugene threw his tambourine up into the air and it landed on a girls head who in his defense was sat on the stage, he went upto her to apologize mid song to receive a slap.
