New Music: Edith Thomas Furey – Sleep Well, My Love (EP)

Dark, brooding, gothic and mysterious. Music to my ears and music indeed from the latest treasure uncovered by the prestigious and productive Valley Heat Records in the form of Edith Thomas Furey‘s new EP, “Sleep Well My Love” and the single “Wednesday”. That something so wintery could emanate from a place as bright and bouncy as Brisbane is a mystery to me, but a glorious one nonetheless.

The single “Wednesday” is a passionate yet chilling slice of guitar-driven, atmospheric post-punk rock that cannot help but evoke the atmosphere and attitude of bands like Bauhaus, and The Sisters of Mercy, shards of guitars over a driving relentless rhythm section. The song is perfectly captured by the banality of the video accompanying the song that films the passage of a suburban train ride to nowhere.

The EP consists of six songs – “Saturday”,”Sunday”, Monday”, “Tuesday”, “Wednesday” and “riverrun” – all drawing in clear influences from early Cure and some, like “Sunday”, displaying a pop sensibility and craft that veers into territory occupied by Empire of the Sun and MGMT.

Edith Thomas Furey is the work of one man -Joel Glazebrook – working from the depths of inner city Brisbane. The EP is released this Wednesday (9 January) and available digitally here.

You can catch the launch in Brisbane at:
January 19 @ Betty’s Espresso (West End)
w/ Start Together, Bright Blue Black & Julia R. Anderson

An extremely limited edition of 30 hand-numbered cassettes will be available at the launch before they go online after the show. The EP, of course, will also be available everywhere digitally.
