Track: Fat Freddys Drop – Blackbird & the album release show

We have this cleaner. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not one of those rich families that mention to everyone that they’ve got a cleaner because that means we must therefore be middle class. We actually need a cleaner. I seem to have bred (and I know they’ll be some argument about this) two of the clumsiest and messiest children I’ve ever come across. But they’re my children, and in my doting eyes they’re also fun and clever and brilliant and, in their own way, perfect.

Coming out of Wellington, New Zealand, are seven strong outfit Fat Freddy’s Drop. There are some very sketchy details coming out of the band’s camp concerning a new album, named Blackbird. Almost a decade of mixing up their unique blend of, well, just about everything has ensued since they burst on the scene with their Midnight Marauders and Hope for a generation records.

The main detail released now is that there is an album release show at Shoreditch’s Village Underground. Tickets are limited to 500 – barely enough for a band whose album Based on a true story is not only the largest selling album ever in their home country by a NZ artist, but also sold 135,000 copies worldwide. So to give us the punters a fair chance of getting in, the band are holding a ballot system where winners will be chosen at random and given access to purchase up to 4 tickets each. Check it out here

Chopper Reeds (yeah, really – brilliant isn’t it), the bands Saxophone players, says of the new record ‘Blackbird is truer to The Drop’s musical philosophy than anything else we’ve done…we’ve pushed ourselves to deliver rich and deeply layered arrangements that showcase Joe Dukie’s exceptional voice, without losing the free-wheeling spirit of our live shows. Our audience knows we are at our best when we’re melding together an unholy mix of dub, disco, soul, techno and blues.’

In other words, although musically speaking Fat Freddy’s Drop make one hell of a mess, in my doting eyes they’re also fun and clever and brilliant and, in their own way (you’ve guessed it, right?), perfect.I’ll give them the number of my cleaner.
