Track: H Hawkline – Moons in my Mirror, plus tour news

Taken from his forthcoming album ‘In the pink of condition’ comes a new single by H Hawkline, aka Huw Gwynfryn Evans. Titled Moons of my Mirror, its out on Monday 26th January via Heavenly Recordings. The album follows on February 2nd and is his first album proper for the label, following on from Augusts Salt Box Ghouls, which was a collection of previous tracks and EP’s.

Followers of his previous two long players, 2010’s ‘A cup of salt’ and the following years ‘The Strange Uses of Ox Gall’, will no doubt be aware of Evans’ switching of languages (the B-side is called Heb Adael Y Ty), and slightly psych infused pop noir – or ‘strange pop’ as Evans himself refers to it, and this is much in evidence once again on ‘In the pink…’, which was recorded at Seahorse Sound Studios in LA, and was produced by long-time cohort Cate Le Bon.

There’s other influences at work too, a myriad of them in fact, but two in particular. Evans takes much inspiration from maverick U.S. author Richard Brautigan (the Hawkline name appropriated from Brautigan’s 1974 ‘gothic western’ The Hawkline Monster) and a Ram era Paul McCartney.

As for Moons in my Mirror, it shimmers right from the off, the psych influence playing right at the forefront, as Evans often floats into his high range with this swirling melody. There’s a little of the post-punk about the accompaniment, but there’s plenty enough in the tune to hang your (melodic) hat on. These cascading guitars and Evans’ la’s herald changes afoot, and he seems to keep the song on a tight leash from there to the end.

Lovely stuff.

Having recently supported Cate Le Bon on her UK tour, H Hawkline has announced details of a UK tour in February which includes a weekly residency throughout the month at Clwb Ifor Bach. He has also been confirmed to play the (unmissable) ‘Heavenly Weekend In Hebden Bridge’ event at the Trades Club on Sunday 25th January 2015.
