Tracks: Library Voices – Oh Donna, plus new album details

There was a chance that Canadian indie rockers Library Voices forthcoming third album, Lovish, might never have seen the light of day. A combination of endless touring, exhaustion, and a serious attack in the street on singer/guitarist Carl Johnson which left him with blood pooling on the front of his brain, a severe concussion, an inability to smell bad odours, meant the future was, at best, uncertain.

But, despite Johnson still not being able to detect foul smells, the band carried on, and the first glimpse of Lovish comes in the shape of a new single, fronted not by Johnson but Brennan Ross, called Oh Donna. It bursts into life, instantly loveable in its gorgeously repetitive soaring lines, “She’s got a taste for the night” Ross calls out. It might be simple, but with its pace changes and ebbs and flows, not to mention these damn fine vocal harmonies and a b-section that could have been implanted from a David Bowie record, and we can only thank the various forces of good that Library Voices carried on.
