Track: Menace Beach – Tennis Court

It took what on the face of it seemed like a rash move to Leeds made by Ryan Needham and Liza Violet, that kicked things off for Menace Beach. They teamed up with MJ from Hookworms (doesn’t everyone in Leeds these days) a cast of friends including Nestor Matthews (drums) and Natt Spalding on Bass. Along with Robert Lee from Pulled Apart By Horses, they crammed into a room overrun with Liza’s cables and home-made synths to reimagine the pairs grainy 8-track demos, so they blasted through the tracks, pulling an all-nighter, adding some shouty vocals courtesy of Lan Mcardle from Joanna Gruesome, and thus producing their forthcoming AA-Side single Tennis Court / Lowtalkin’, out on Memphis Industries on 1st September.

Tennis Beach begins with this slacker rock guitar figure, before the track grows and evolves into heavy riffs and frayed edges, with these noisy guitar lines interspersed with Pixies like chorus’. The whole thing has this deliciously sour music, contrasted against the sweet of the chorus, with Liza’s effortless vocals giving the whole thing an ethereal feel, and which makes Tennis Court melodic psych indie of the finest quality.

No wonder they decided to stick around in Leeds.
