EP: Rae Morris – Closer

Currently on tour with none other than George Ezra, Blackpool singer-songwriter Rae Morris has released her new EP, Closer, out now on Atlantic Records. It comes ahead of her debut album Unguarded which drops on January 26th.

It opens with the title track, this tangled, swaying thing of beauty. It’s stripped back at first, not much more than piano, but it spreads its wings as the track progresses, with this spirited bassline added that little bite of funk as the percussion tumbles and the piano converses. It’s the chorus though that really shines, showing off both Morris’ georgeously smoky vocal, while delivering what amounts to a little nugget of perfect pop.

Up again is slower, more circumspect and allows Morris’ voice to breath, to become expressive. Soaked in echo, it floats and dives, sweetened by harmonies as it drags the emotion out. Closer My God is another example of sweet but razor sharp writing, as these tribal drums add some drama to proceedings as it eventually gives way after being persuaded by the strings to this huge chorus, the bass dropping, acting as a carpet as the tension is finally released.

An EP of smart, even sassy pop music which marks our Rae Morris as an individual voice, lovely stuff.
