EP: United Fruit – Nightmare Recovery

United Fruit have made a triumphant return with their exhilarating new EP.

This band are no strangers to creating a lot of noise, having gained a reputation as an unrelenting live act – touring with bands like Twin Atlantic and The Twilight Sad and being a part of the DIY and Dr Martens sponsored #StandForSomething tour. They have pounded the stages of festivals all over the world including T in The Park, Rock For People and SXSW 2015. Their new EP, ‘Nightmare Recovery’ (released on 13 November via Ditto Music) finds them successfully translating their huge live sound to record.

Lead track ‘Nightmare Recovery’ is the punchy opener that manages to shift between the post-punk, post-rock and shoegaze influences that they are experimenting with throughout the EP.

Iskandar Stewart’s vocals echo around the melodic ‘Ghost Inside Your Head’ that, although not as instantly anthemic as the first track, rockets along on feverish drums and huge riffs while embedding itself in your brain.

‘Cause And Effect’ is a slow burner that becomes heavier as venom infuses the vocals. Stewart, at times sounding like James Dean Bradfield, has his voice wrapped in a wall of noise that builds throughout. This track perfectly winds its way between soaring and snarling.

It’s easy to imagine these tracks blasting out across festival fields next year, but before then the band are embarking on a UK headline tour. Discussing their ambitions for the future earlier this year, guitarist Stuart Galbraith said: “You’ve got to believe you’re going to do bigger and better things every time… you’ve got to have that vision or else you’re not going to do it. We’re here, so it’s kinda worked.” The sound is bigger and seems to suit them better. It has definitely worked and I can’t wait to hear more from this band.
This EP has me in a rock reverie but I’m still recovering from the shock that there are only three tracks to get lost in.
