THE CRADLE of Two Tone, Coventry, is busy donning its finery as it assumes the mantle of UK City of Culture 2021; and none other than Terry Hall himself is bringing a series of great gigs to the city entitled Terry Hall Presents At Home Sessions.
And one of the most eye-opening bills during the series will see Bristol punk-dub politicos The Pop Group perform alongside the Barbadian producer Dennis Bovell, MBE, with a world premiere performance of the 1979 album Y, in dub, at the Coventry Empire on July 31st.
This new dub rereading of a classic post-punk record reunites band and producer more than 40 years on, live and direct.
The Pop Group’s Mark Stewart says: “Dub to me is the music of chance. A teenage dream come true – at last – this one’s for the explorers.”
Elsewhere Terry Hall’s At Home Sessions will see performances by the man himself, Roni Size, Massive Attack’s Daddy G in performance with Queen Bee, The Eccentronic Research Council and Maxine Peak. and UNKLE.

The Pop Group’s Y first hit the world on April 20th, 1979, and was Dennis’s first venture outside reggae. It set a blueprint which so many other bands would follow, with PiL’s Metal Box, The Slits, New Age Steppers and more following into the enthralling possibilities of punk-dub.
