The magnificent Fontaines D.C. have announced their third album, ‘Skinty Fia’, to be released on 22 April 2022 on Partisan Records. After the double pleasures of ‘Doggerel’ and ‘A Hero’s Death’ released within one year of each other back in 2020, 2021 was a relatively quiet period for the Dublin band in terms of releases. News of the album comes with the unveiling of its first single, ‘Jackie Down The Line’ – replete with a video directed by Hugh Mulhern and starring multidisciplinary artist, MC, dancer, and choreographer, Blackhaine.

‘Jackie Down The Line’ continues with Fontaines D.C.’s astute observational style, mixing a sense of melancholy with defiance, a poetic vision that captures the minutiae and vicissitudes of mundane existence and imbues it with a sparkle and shimmer. A Bass VI rumble provides a deep and sinuous line under the splashing guitars and the repetitive, hypnotic delivery is enthralling.

What good is happiness to me
if I’ve to wield it carefully?
For care I’ll always come up short
It’s only right

The video is both languid and enigmatic, befitting the band itself.

A welcome return indeed. You can stream/download ‘Jackie Down The Line’ here.

‘Skinty Fia’ is an Irish phrase which translates to English as “the damnation of the deer” and the album’s cover art features a rare Irish deer, plucked from its natural habitat and deposited in the hallway of a home, illuminated by an artificial red glow. A reflection of the band itself now that the members no longer live in their hometown, and a symbol of their new world view as a global phenomenon.
