News: Warp announce CARGAA series / stream DJ Nigga Fox ‘LUMI’

With Lisbon being at the heart of a lot of the more interesting and cross cultural dance music being made right at the moment, Warp Records have jumped on board the scene, announcing their new 3 record CARGAA series of compilations, and saying its been “inspired by the sheer amount of incredible young artists in and around Lisbon.”

CARGAA 1 (taken from the popular slang term on the streets of Lisbon, meaning hot, or heavy, although Carga actually means charge – the AA added referring to the battery charge) it features tracks from two of the city’s big hitters – DJ Nigga Fox and DJ Marfox with the rest of the record being made up with tracks from Blacksea Nao Maya, DJ Ly Co-Ox and 17-year-old producer DJ Nedwyt-Fox. The first glimpse of the treasures contained within came last night, when Flying Lotus premiered DJ Nigga Fox’s LUMI. On his Radio 1 residency slot.

It opens with this woozy, wonky pads line, assorted sounds and electronics creating this unsettling feeling, before it grows into this weird, stripped back grime track, still uncomfortable but yet enthralling at the same time, the meldody carried on the synths as they play around a motif. There’s African influences at work as well as European ones, but its a sound all of its own. And an exciting one at that.
