We’re delighted to be able to premiere the new single from Louisville, KY born singer-songwriter Andrew Rinehart – More Real right here on Backseat Mafia today. It’s a cover of a Arthur Russell song, done by a band, The Necessaries, with whom Russell played alongside Ernie Brooks of the Modern Lovers and Jesse Chamberlain, who played with Mayo Thompson’s Red Krayola. It’s taken from his forthcoming six track EP, Have Fun Idiot, out on August 6th.
Of the track, Rinehart says “I’ve always loved the song — and feel a certain kinship with Arthur Russell — so I was excited to do my own rendition of it. It was recorded in my hometown of Louisville, KY, and mixed by Jorge Elbrecht. I hope it does a little good in the world.”
Rinehart makes the song his own (well, as much as you can with an Arthur Russell number) with this effortlessly cool rendition that sways between indie pop and early 80s power pop, they wiry jangling guitars splashed all over the track, while his delivery just creeps almost unnoticed into your mind, while the thing increasingly drives its way to a glorious close.
