As Paul McCartney once sang, some people want to fill the world with silly love songs. California native Andy Frasco is not that kind of person. At least, he isn’t anymore. Two years of collective pandemic-induced trauma changes people, and reconnecting with oneself takes time. The title of his new album calls to mind the minutiae of our lives we have been forced to confront: two years where all most of us could do was Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
It’s an album about change: both societal and personal. ‘Grow Old’ is indeed a love song, but not one with its head in the clouds. It deals with the idea of love itself, and how to hold on to it when things don’t work out. In other words, it’s an iron fist in a velvet glove; don’t be fooled by its breezy tempo and the soundscape created by Frasco and his backing band, the U.N (and also a whole bunch of collaborators he met on tour): “[It’s] about not giving up on love before it even has a chance to bloom. We seem to run away from love when the going gets tough, but what I’m realising as I get older is that true love doesn’t just come without effort. It takes work, and it takes going through the full cycle of emotions to really let that love blossom like a flower.”
