Cardiff’s Blue Amber are gearing up to the release of their new single Welsh Girl, out Monday 1st March via Rose Parade Recording Co.’s Single’s Club, and ahead of it we’re delighted to be able to premiere the accompanying video right here on Backseat Mafia.

Following on from the funked up post-punk of previous single Red Moon Song we so enjoyed back in December, Welsh Girl is a more delicate, indie folk affair, much influenced by American psych folk musician Jessica Risker’s 2018 cut Anyway When I Look In Your Eyes, with band member Drew Noel stating: “Welsh Girl came about during a tumultuous time in my life, the days and nights blending into each other, all sense of time lost. The instrumental was influenced by the Psychedelic Hip Hop of Kids See Ghosts, the mix of sampling and folk of The Books and the sweet, honest songwriting of Jessica Risker. The lyrics were inspired by vivid dreams and flashbacks of a past relationship against the backdrop of a country at war with itself. The hook of the song was written and performed by Jessica Risker, who kindly let us sample her on this record.”

It’s an affecting slice of pop music, the Noel’s spoken word verses accompanied by these hazy waves of guitars, with this hip-hop beat keeping things travelling. At the chorus things wind down, Freyja Elsy’s fragile vocal capable of breaking hearts.

It’s a beautiful, sunny slice of melancholic pop. You must listen and watch the lyric video, here
