Premiere: Boyracer release new video for ‘Girl in a Soul Band’

Boyracer, beloved indie artists of iconic labels such as Sarah and Slumberland, are back with a new album – ‘On a Promise’, out via Emotional Response Records on June 5th, and from it we’re delighted to premiere the video for ‘Girl in a Soul Band’ right here on Backseat Mafia today.

The album is the bands 13th and was recorded over a two year period in places as far away as Flagstaff Arizona, Sydney Australia, Berlin Germany, and Scarborough UK. Imbued with a renewed verve and song writing mojo, the band are at their most confident and comfortable in years, and main protagonist Stewart Anderson has drafted in a cast of…well maybe not thousands, but quite a few to help. Alongside Christina Riley (Artsick, Burnt Palms) who is a permanent fixture, Sarah Records-Era member Simon Guild makes a return to Boyracer after a 27 year absence , as does Laura Bridge (Kicker, Hood etc), who also returns to the fold after 29 years to make her Boyracer vinyl debut on 2 of the tracks!  Also featured are Mary Wyer and Anita Rayner (Even As We Speak), Snowy (Ocean Party), Penny McBride (Cannanes), and longtime well known Boyracer members Matty Green, Jen Turrell, Ged McGurn and Ara Hacopian.

Girl in a Soul Band shows that Stewart and his charges have lost none of their delicious fuzz pop leanings, with the song blasting off with these gloriously messy bassline, while the guitar continues to splatter the track with squeals and solos and more riffs throughout. Over the top, Stewart races through this loveable melody, extoling his wish to indeed sing like a girl in a soul band, with liberal slices of backing vocals and trumpet spread all over it.

In keeping with the bands DIY ethos (and lockdown as well), the video is a typically fun affair, and fits the song perfectly.
