Premiere: Climbing Trees exclusively reveal their dynamic and shimmering new single Troubling Times.

Welsh indie giants Climbing Trees will be releasing their much anticipated new single ‘Troubling Times’ on 30 April 2021, and we here at Backseat Mafia are very excited to bring to you an exclusive first listen of the single. And it is an absolute delight.

The band says:

We’re chuffed to share ‘Troubling Times’ with the rest of the world through Backseat Mafia, ‘the best in new and forgotten music’, in our ongoing quest to be closer to the former rather than the latter.  It’s always a little nerve-wracking releasing a new track into the wild – particularly when we’ve been hibernating for so long – so feel free to give us a shout and let us know what you think.  Unless you hate it, of course…

‘Troubling Times’ is the direct result of the vicissitudes of 2020 – a troubled time we would all like to forget. On the bright side, the period has resulted in beautifully crafted jewels such as this.

The guitars are crystalline and sparkling – exploding through the speakers like an erupting volcano – with reflective, melodic vocals that evoke long journeys and wistful dreams. There is a folk reverberation detectable – creating a bucolic, pastoral sweep – along with celestial instrumentation. The result is something that is quite simply euphoric and energising while touched with an air of melancholy and wonder.

It’s been three years since we last heard from the band. Singer Matthew Frederick says:

We decided to take a year off in 2018 to spend a little time on our various solo and side projects. Before we knew it, two years had passed, then three, and a whole lot has happened in the world in that time. We didn’t want to come back until we had something to say, and, more importantly, a good song to say it with, and Troubling Times certainly feels timely in that sense We’ve really enjoyed making music as Climbing Trees again, and we can’t wait to get back out on stage in front of the Trees fans, whenever that may be…

Haunting strings punctuate the sober message and provide a sparkling shimmer, and the band creates a resultant mesmerising, dreamy fugue – you can sense the inherent passion and sense of wonder. This is an imperial, statuesque and cinematic release: an accomplished and very satisfying return that is warm and enveloping like a warm cotton wool cloud.

Released via Staylittle Music and distributed by The Orchard and PYST, the track will be available to download and stream across all major digital platforms from Friday April 30th 2021 – you can pre-save ‘Troubling Times’ here.
