‘Onward (To You)’ has a bittersweet melancholic thread that runs through the celestial synth sounds, evidence that Melbourne’s Telescreen is a massive shining star in the indie pop firmament. There is without doubt an eighties sparkle with the washes of synths that bubble and sweep across the wide horizons of this band’s scope. Backseat Mafia is honoured to be able to give you a sneak taste before the track is released tomorrow, and it is a delectable dish to serve up indeed.

Mountainous choruses and a melody that sticks like super glue – it is business as usual for the band (see our review of earlier single ‘Moving On’ from last year) which have created a shimmering dream pop ambience. Lead singer and guitarist Nic Schwarz says of the track, born in the depths of the debilitating series of lockdowns faced by Melburnites:

This song is a reflection of that sincere, starry eyed hope. It’s got this real sense of belief and optimism about it that fills me with desperate anticipation for what could be next. Similarly the track itself builds and builds throughout the song, all leading up to that final moment of blissful release and the feeling of “I’m gonna make it”. Onward reminds me that time is constantly moving us toward our next big break, our next lover, turning us into the person we want and need to be.

There is a detectable air of resilience and strength shining through what is a piece of pure indie pop sparkle.

‘Onward (to You)’ is out tomorrow (26 August 2021) and you can pe-save and pre-order here.
