It says a lot about how long Swedish gothic rock band De Arma had been sitting on second album Strayed in Shadows (finally released last June after years in limbo) that they’ve rebounded from that pretty much immediately. Well, we call them ‘gothic rock’ but they’ve taken in everything from black metal to post-rock and synthwave; and for their next move, they’re changing course again.
We’re lifting the veil on their bleak, intense and beautiful new EP Nightcall, which finds them running with a dystopian narrative while moving into yet more new musical territory as they embrace haunting darkwave atmosphere. Depeche Mode‘s more depressive turns, more recent Paradise Lost fare and even the likes of Drab Majesty provide points of comparison for the 22-minute journey, out today via Silent Future/Nordvis and premiering with us.
