We are honoured to premiere the new single ‘Arise’ from Sydney group Winter Starlings. ‘Arise’ has a warm veracity with raw and visceral guitars that jangle into the stratosphere, replete with yearning vocals and delicate harmonies. There is a subtle folk/americana in the delivery, a Byrdsian jingle jangle with a Teenage Fanclub pop spine. However, there is also a shimmering glow that recalls an antipodean indie pop thread linked to bands like The Apartments, The Chills and The Bats.

Singer songwriter Robin Fitzgerald says of the track and its positivity:

The song came about while I was sitting on a train one morning getting frustrated about being stuck between Redfern & Central for no apparent reason … grrrr.  Arise is a song about optimism! You can have a bad day but it passes and a new day comes, it’s the concept of going to sleep, waking & resetting on a new day where things go right 🙂 Not worrying about the things that are out of your control …

In spite of a slight melancholic air, the song engenders a sort of bucolic, late afternoon sunshine reverie: a languid sense of ease and comfort.

‘Arise’ is out in the ether on Friday, 18 March through all the usual download sites.

This is another glorious shell in the Marrickville Sound canon. Winter Starlings contains members of local legends Marveline, The Safety of Life at Sea and The Nature Strip. The band will be launching the single at The Gasoline Pony in (fittingly!) Marrickville, Sydney on May 22nd.

Winter Starlings are:

Robin Fitzgerald – Acoustic guitar & vocals
Jack Dunn – Electric guitar & vocals
Peter Marley – Double bass & vocals
Tony Bibby – Drums
