Waxflower are having an exciting year. Let’s all try not to be too jealous that as we’re rotting away on our couches, Waxflower are getting out there and making a name for themselves. They just released their newest track, ‘Not Alone’ a couple of weeks ago, which landed a place on Spotify’s New Punk Tracks playlist right away. Not only this, but the band are releasing their highly anticipated first fully cohesive EP We Might Be Alright on April 16th!
Here at Backseat Mafia, we’re excited to have the privilege of showing you some of the behind the scenes happenings from during the recording of the upcoming EP! All the footage was taken by Giles Higginson on a handycam, so this really is a personal inside look into the time they spent working on this record. It shows some of their time recording, as well as some other snippets of them having some down time. The band had this to say about bringing Giles into the studio to get the footage; “Giles is the 5th member of this band, so it only felt right to bring him along to the studio too. He dug out an old Handycam and just started filming. He’s quiet and we all feel so comfortable around him, so he really captured the essence of who we are and the way we were feeling throughout the whole recording experience”
“The video captures us just being ourselves, goofing off in the studio & trying to enjoy the process of recording, whilst also having the internal pressure of trying to create something larger than ourselves“. You can check out that video here!
Waxflower, originally from Brisbane, have a summery pop-punk sound that is not dissimilar of that of the likes of All Time Low, with some All American Rejects vibes thrown in there as well. Latest track ‘Not Alone‘ is no exception, and it’s extremely easy to imagine the bright, Brisbane sun beating down whilst you’re mid-listen- one can only imagine they’re not exactly stuck for inspiration when writing honest, uplifting tunes.
According to the band, the EP explores themes such as hopefulness, unity and finding strength within yourself. Frontman Tristan Higginson described the EP as “a perfect representation of what we’ve learned over the last year or two as well as the experiences I’ve had along the way. Hopefully people can resonate with its optimism, the world surely needs some right now.” Optimism is definitely one thing that is abundant in Waxflower’s music, that’s for sure.
