Psych Insight: Grass On The Sun – The Corner / Feel it Coming

There seems to be a very healthy Italian psych scene at the moment and, like in the late 60s and early 70s, there seems to be quite a range of bands out there. These include In Zaire and The Diaphanoids, both of whom I wrote about recently, and The Vickers: also Backseat Mafia favourites.

These are just a few examples of what I’m sure is a very long list of bands, to which I want to add Grass On The Sun which is the project of Alessandro Hicks (vocals and electric guitar) and Gabriele Sancho (drum machine, bass, sounds) from Massa, Italy. They describe themselves as a space rock/ shoe gaze band; and they are certainly references to likes of Spacemen 3 and the Jesus and Mary Chain in their music.

The band will be bringing out its first EP later this year, which will include the two tracks that their brought out so far. ‘The Corner’ is probably typical of their sound as described’ nice Spacemen 3-style vocals, a fuzzy sound, but with a crisp guitar sawing its way through the mist. ‘Feel It Coming’ is a slower track which has a certain Psychic Ills lugubriousness to it; one of those tracks that seems to have its own gravitational field.

From the evidence here Grass On The Sun are only going to add to the oeuvre of Italian psych in a positive way. Good stuff!
