Say Psych: Live, Dreamweapon, Liverpool PsychFest, 26.09.15

The Portuguese label ‘Lovers and Lollipops’ is one of those that seems to be able to put out a seemingly endless supply of interesting and unusual acts. My two favourite acts from the first day of 2014’s PsychFest, Black Bombaim and Jibóia, were both from that label. So when I saw that another ‘Lovers and Lollipops’ act was on the bill for Saturday afternoon I was intrigued to say the least. I had not heard of Dreamweapon before, and information about the band is sparse, but having heard the group’s eponymously titled album released by the Portuguese label, I have a feeling that they are going to be something of a revelation, in the way that Jibóia was for me last year.

Opening up the Camp stage on the second day of the Festival, a slot that is perhaps not the best, Dreamweapon were quickly off and running playing their a great combination laid back drone and angular avant garde noises. Playing a strong set from their aforementioned album, including my favourite track ‘Eyes’. For me they were the perfect antidote to the tiredness I was feeling after a very long Day 1 of the festival as they managed to help me forget where I was and draw me into the complex waves and eddys of their music, while at the same time getting me back in the mood to engage with the psychedelic nature of the second day’s line-up.

Dreamweapon, then, delivered a short set that was not an easy listen, but one that built in intensity really showcasing what they are capable of, I look forward to seeing them again soon.
