Formed via the spirit of adolescent excitement in Bristol at the tail end of 2016, Captain Süün are a band well and truly beyond their tender years. Following a handful of gigs in 2017 including a raucous set at Bristol Psych Fest’s opening event in July, they caught the attention of Stolen Body Records who are set to release their EP Beach Burrito on 25th May.
The quartet, whose expansive appreciation for psych far exceeds most, recognise the importance of songs above all else. Frontman Dan Dale, a songwriter first and foremost, is incredibly skilled at tapping the well of the Lizard King, as well as influences ranging from John Martyn to The Byrds.
The four-track offering opens with ‘Skyline’, a hazy track with lashings of reverberated guitar and an incremental melody that doesn’t fail to impress. The lazy style to the vocals channels some Dead Meadow vibes, leaving the focus on the musical interplay. Title track ‘Beach Burrito’ starts with a western-esq riff championed by the likes of Spindrift, before moving into some quirky beach goth vibes with it building in momentum as it progresses. ‘Amber’ is more harmonious, with a slower pace and a less chaotic sound, all elements being clearer and more concise it shows a different side to the band from its predecessor tracks. Concluding ‘In Your Mind (Mankind)’ opens with a raw, unaffected guitar riff which dominates throughout with new intricate details added as the track progresses.
This EP is a perfect introduction to the raw energy of the band, whilst showcasing that they are more than a one trick pony and can produce great tracks in record too.
