I KNOW, I know. “Wake Up Boo!” the ubiqituous feelgood summer hit that propelled them right to the top of the pile, blasting from a million radios up and down the land.
But let’s step back and deeper into the canon: the dub majesty of “Lazarus” (watch out for cameos from McGee and Liz Hurley in the video); the brilliant, shoegazey howl of “Does This Hurt?”; the later pop squall of “C’mon Kids”. Truth is, The Boos were always much, much more than that one song.
And whoah … they’ve returned with their first new music in 23 (count ’em) years, since that final album, Kingsize and its criminally ignored contents, such as the lovely “From The Bench At Belvidere”.
This very morning they’ve dropped “A Full Syringe And Memories Of You”, with that unmistakeable Sice vocal, a little electronica chitter-chatter and classic melodic penmanship with a late-Sixties, Laurel Canyon feel. Hey, don’t listen to me, listen to it; we’ve embedded it for you down below.
A reconciliation between Sice, drummer Rob Chieka and bassist and keyboardist Tim Brown was engendered by creative restlessness, chance meetings and curiosity (Martin Carr isn’t involved this time out).
Singer-songwriter Simon ‘Sice’ Rowbottom says of the unexpected but welcome return: “’A Full Syringe And Memories Of You’ tackles the religious hypocrisy that privileges the longevity of life above all other measures of worth and seeks to redress the distorted view that life is always worth living, whatever the cost.”
Neither is the song a hello, goodbye dip back into the pool: “A Full Syringe And Memories Of You” will lead out an EP, to be confirmed, with album sessions and rehearsals for a tour also under way.
