BRIGHTON’S Austerity Records, the up and coming label home already to the dark-edged dream pop stylings of the lovely Winter Gardens, is pleased to announce another worthy addition to its roster: London solo artiste Daisy Coburn.
Today at Backseat Mafia we’re premiering the flaming first fruits of this new partnership, with the video for the track “Fire”: have a watch below. It’s the lead single from her debut EP for Austerity, No Love, which will be released on December 11th.
Imagine, if you will, Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” transposed elementally from the heartbroken snow and ice of Wisconsin to a much more scorched environment, full of hipswing and pride and sass – with Daisy’s voice, by turns all soaring with the heat of the bruised and wronged; cracked and devilish, louche with a country inflection.
Actually, for Daisy, like the phoenix, it’s a rebirth in fire; she’s been in the industry before, walked away.
She was a member of short-lived “conveyor belt indie pop” outfit Daisy Dares You; then her career took a meander through different bands, different cities (Pink Lizards, Bad For Lazarus, Clever Thing and The Duke Spirit), all while she began to conceive of her own sound.
“When I left the music industry as we know it at the age of 16, I went off to find myself,” she says.
“Being catapulted into some level of public exposure was very confrontational for me. However short-lived it really birthed my musical journey, which still dominates my life ten years on.
“I knew what I didn’t want to do, and for a long time I felt the answer was in aesthetics or sonics. I was listening to Billie Holiday and Nirvana records when I was signed, and my intrigue into the world of music ballooned from then on. I became obsessed with Syd Barrett, early Pink Floyd, The Beatles,
Buffy Sainte-Marie, Cream, Jimi Hendrix … the list, of course, goes on.”
Of her first single drop, she has this to share.
“Being diplomatically tongue in cheek, ‘Fire’ is a playful but honest portrayal of self preservation after the end of something.
“Lyrics such as ‘Can I be a grown up? I won’t hold my breath’ and ‘From the bottom of my heart, I wish you the very best, it’s in my best interest, to be nice …” embody the emotions I was recalling whilst writing this song.
“The song itself is an example of how I work as a writer, trying to make a little fun out of the experiences that weren’t funny at the time.
I am utterly thrilled to be releasing my first single with Jim and Garry at Austerity Records: a grassroots, no-nonsense label that do it for all the right reasons made total sense for me.
“Disillusioned with the industry to an extent, I endeavour to work with authentic individuals who strive to protect and facilitate the musical underworld we inhabit.”
