HAILING by birth from the original OC, Orange County, Californ-i-a, Parker James and Caden Shea, the duo who together comprise the gloriously stoner outfit Olive Vox, moved way inland to Dallas as kids, uprooted into a different way of being.
Kicking their heels during the hellish restrictions of 2020 they listened, practised, listened, jammed, listened some more and came firing out of the garage with a fine, greasy line in stoner rock.
Their upward curve has been pretty precipitous, beginning as recently as August with the righteous sludge of “Bury Me Low”, which they followed last month with a take on du jour stoner godhead Ty Segall’s “Finger”, shortly before opening for Ty’s band Fuzz at Austin’s Levitation Festival; and now a third tune has landed, the more Seattle roar of “Sunflower”. In a feature with Psychedelic Baby Magazine Parker said of this latest buzzin’ fuzzin’ three minutes: “The lyrics are a metaphor of how I struggled in school, being dyslexic.”
They’ve been playing a few dates Stateside and if you’re on the east coast you can catch them at one final show this year: they’re appearing at LA’s The Mint on December 1st. Get down there, shake your locks.
