Idles have released “Model Village”, the latest single from their 3rd LP Ultra Mondo, a commentary on life in a small town. The video, made of cardboard cutouts like something from South Park, features pig-like humans doing what we humans do, bashing each other, drinking, running around headless living the lives we’re supposed to live. The visuals are perfectly made to illustrate the snarky lyrics, which are delivered in that half hip-hop, half punk, but oh so entertainingly British way we’ve come to love about Idles.
It’s a commentary on small-town life, and vocalist Joe Talbot had this to say about the lyrics: “I hated growing up in a city that was really a town that was really a fishbowl.” It’s kind of a tired subject to comment on, which is why Talbot’s follow-up comment was so welcomed: “I left as soon as I could, only to realize the fishbowl didn’t exist…just the fish, and they’re everywhere”. A bit of self-reflection is never easy but always worth it.
