FLYING high, flying free, with an absolutely gorgeous line in glittery, psychedelic synthpop, LIP TALK – the musical avatar of New Yorker Sarah K Pedinotti – has returned to the melodic modular breach once more with the absolutely lush “Solar Return”, gloried with her mellifluous tones, breathy, bell-clear, more than a little Liz Fraser in there; and all garlanded round with spacey retro synth handled with aplomb.
At once a nostalgic and celebratory tune about time passing, Sarah says: “It’s a snapshot of how we celebrated a birthday during 2020. It’s about memory and the present moment; witnessing your own life reflected back through an old friend.” The song comes complemented with a video assembled from footage from that time; cos gawd, doesn’t 2020 feel an aeon away, a whole spinning, traumatic other thing?
“Solar Return” follows two previous standalone singles, both of which we loved: “More”, taking a light-touch angel on one shoulder, devil on the other approach to our craven and craving society; and the dayglo critique of inexhaustible comsumerism of “Bargain Day”. Both of these were created as part of her ongoing song-a-day writing experiment called These Are Photographs, in which Sarah meditates on an image and then writes and records a new track in a single day.

Sarah is a frequent collaborator and player in numerous bands, including Kalbells, Okkervil River, and The Secret Machines, as well as writing songs for Cuddle Magic and Benjamin Lazar Davis. Great, isn’t she?
