THE MARTHA’S VINEYARD FERRIES, the loud and deliciously, abrasively proud trio brought together by Shellac’s mighty Bob Weston, Chris Brokaw, of Come and Codeine, and Elisha Wiesner, otherwise of Kahoots, have dropped the video for a lip-curlingly LOUD and guitar heavy new song, “Jail Material” – you can take a dive down the bottom there.
It’s paving the way to the release of their third album, Suns Out Guns Out, which follows at the end of this month, and comes hot on the heels of the blink-and-you-miss-it, low-slung scuzz of “Betty Ford James”. It comes, it does it beautifully; it leaves you wanting more.
They’ve been away a good long while – their 2010 debut In The Pond was followed by 2013’s Mass Grave, since when, nada; but never doubt the tightly wound, hook-laden underground rawk they ply with excellence.
Suns Out Guns Out was recorded in fits and starts between 2015 and the end of 2019, sessions mostly split between Elisha’s home studio on Martha’s Vineyard and Bob’s Chicago basement. Some portions were composed in record time, others, agonized over for years.
And of course, this is the exact right moment in history to re-emerge with a set of guitars being hurt real good, wired tight as a tension fence; what with absolutely everything going swimmingly.
