SEE: Oya Paya – ‘Focus’: a slacker-pop winter warmer

Oya Paya

IF YOU like a bit of bouncy slacker rock, all loose, chantalong lyrics primed for some Converse-meets-dancefloor action, with guitars scrappy and all about the downstroke and fun, then wrap that listening gear around the latest video from Liverpool’s loose-limbed Oya Paya, “Focus”.

With just days to go in 2020, the three-piece – drawling singer-guitarist Maxime McGowan, bassist and producer Saam Jafarzadeh and drummer Ashwin Menon – thought they’d bring a little bullet of 13-era Blur scrappy geetar excellence to the world as a welcome winter warmer with accompanying visuals; the tracks previously been up on SoundCloud a while without the optic dimension. Take a listen below.

“Focus” makes it a triple hit for singles from the band this year, following previous drops “That Felt Good” and “Philip”, and also paves the way for the forthcoming mini-album, Connect, which is pencilled in for release next year.

Maxim, Saam and Ashwin, who sum up the Oya Pya schtick as “a smelly group of twentysomethings making spicy music” put together the six-track mini-album entirely remotely during lockdown; the three of them were separated by nearly 7,000 miles, never once all recording in the same room. The wonders of technology; it’s helped keep us all together this year and the music flowin’, hasn’t it?
