SEE: Sarah Walk – ‘Nobody Knows’: fine rootsiness with foreboding in its chest

IT COMES in, warm and inviting, on a rootsy shuffle, downhome guitars unfolding in a soothing figure; we watch Sarah awake, arise, busy herself with the functions of the everyday.

There’s tea, there’s toast; spectacles to select. The first coffee. It’s just … y’know … a day

Or is it? Feel the tension building, as Sarah intones “What if it never comes, what if it never / Comes, what if it …” polyrhythmically across those enfolding guitars and a rising synth wash.

Sarah explains the dark experience and the catharsis behind the song: “I wrote ‘Nobody Knows’  during a time of depression for me where I felt like I couldn’t muster up the ambition or drive to get through the discomfort needed to get to a point of creation.

“It’s like a double-edged sword because you feel depressed so you don’t want to do anything, but then you feel even more depressed because you haven’t felt able to get anything done. I was feeling stuck in the middle of that cycle and not sure how to break out of it.”

Be thankful she has, on both a humanist and a musical level, fashioning a tune at once acoustically blissful yet lyrically hard-edged.

“Nobody Knows” follows “Unravel”, which we enjoyed here, as singles trailing what promises to be a very intelligent set of leftfield pop music on Another Me, her second album, which is out on August 28th on One Little Independent. It’ll be available on digital, CD and vinyl formats and you can get yours ordered here.
