Track: The Twilight Sad – Untitled #4, plus tour dates and reissue news

It doesn’t seem two minutes since fresh faced Scottish indie rockers The Twilight Sad released their debut album Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters. Taking their name from Wilfred Owens ‘The War Poems’ (sleep mothered them; and left the twilight sad) there was always something dark and emotional about the band.

Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters came out in April 2007, to almost universal critical acclaim. Despite being recorded in only three days, it showcased the bands reverb soaked, shoegazey indie rock. Singer James Graham’s thickly accented singing style was made to sound all the more like the bands own description ‘folk with layers of noise’. It was further enhanced by the presence of accordion, which rides seamlessly underneath the guitar lines.

Out 19th April on FatCat records is the deluxe reissue of the album. As well as the original (remastered) tracks, which included early songs such as ‘That Summer, at home I had become the Invisible boy’ and ‘And she would darken the memory’ it featured the fantastic ‘Walking for two hours’, surely one of the best songs the band has ever written. The double vinyl reissue also featured unseen artwork and never-before-heard tracks from the original recording sessions.

One of those never before heard tracks is Untitled #4, which the band are streaming now. Draped in the dark shoegaze associated with the band, it surges and swells with this feeling of immense power. It’s unhappy, pleading stuff, and Graham’s voice is affecting and emotional. It shows the strength of the bands songwriting armoury that their out takes would stand out on some bands records. The vinyl, limited to 500 copies in the UK, will be available from participating independent record shops on Record Store Day.

They’ve also confirmed they’ll be playing this year’s T In The Park festival on Sunday 13th July, and a handful of other dates across the country, where they’ll be playing their debut record in its entirety.
